Well, this was a long time coming. Kanye West has been closely affiliated with Harlem rapper/singer Teyana Taylor for some time now, but this week it was confirmed that Taylor has officially been signed to ‘Ye’s G.O.O.D. Music label.
The 21-year-old singer-songwriter and actress, who worked with West on his fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, will reveal details about her first G.O.O.D. Music LP and forthcoming singles in the next few weeks. In April she debuted a new mixtape, The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor, which pays tribute to Lauryn Hill and her other early influences, including Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson.
Taylor got her start in the industry when she was signed to Pharrell William’s Star Trak record label at the age of 15, and some fans might remember her over-the-top episode of MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16.” Her debut album, 2008′s From a Planet Called Harlem, featured the breakout single “Google Me,” and Taylor has since earned plenty of co-writing credits on recent songs like Nicki Minaj’s “Right By My Side,” which appeared on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Taylor worked closely with West on MBDTF‘s “Hell of a Life,” “Runaway,” “Dark Fantasy” and the collaboration track “Christmas in Harlem,” which also featured G.O.O.D. Music’s CyHi the Prynce.

The 5520 seems inspired by the same underlying design philosophy as the office-centric HP Officejet 6600 e-All-in-One ($149.99 direct, 3.5 stars) that I recently reviewed. This is certainly true to the extent that both take a pass on a lot of common extras like an Ethernet connector while offering lots of less common extras. For example, both use touch screens for their front panel controls, with well designed menus that make them easy to use. More significantly, both offer a collection of features that earn them HP’s designation of e-All-in-One.
For the 5520, being an e-All-in-One means that it supports HP ePrint (HP’s approach to printing through the cloud), HP Web apps (a collection of apps available through the Web), Apple AirPrint (for printing from iOS devices), and the HP ePrint Home & Biz print app (for printing from both Android and iOS devices).
Note that to take advantage of ePrint, AirPrint, or HP’s Web apps, it’s not enough for the printer to be connected by a USB cable to a computer that’s on a network. The printer itself has to be connected to a network by WiFi. And for ePrint and Web apps, the network has to be connected to the internet. However, the HP ePrint Home & Biz print app can connect to the printer directly, whether you have a WiFi network or not.
Basics
The 5520′s basic MFP features are limited to printing, scanning, and copying. It can also print from or scan to memory cards, but it lacks a USB type A port for printing from PictBridge cameras or for printing from and scanning to USB keys. Like many home-oriented printers, however, it includes built-in templates you can print from commands in the front-panel menu system, including choices for notebook paper, graph paper, music paper, and games, with unlimited variations on mazes and Sudoku puzzles generated by built-in algorithms.
The paper capacity is limited to just 80 sheets, but the printer also includes automatic duplexing (for printing on both sides of the page), which is a welcome option for saving paper. One benefit of a low paper capacity is that the printer doesn’t have to be very large. With the trays fully extended, the 5520 measures 16.3 by 17.5 by 22.6 inches (HWD), but the printer body is only about 12 inches deep. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding room for it on your desk.
Setup, Speed and Output Quality
Setting up the 5520 is standard fare. For my tests, I connected it by USB cable and installed the drivers and software on a system running Windows Vista.
On our business applications suite, (timed with QualityLogic’s hardware and software), the printer came in at a reasonably fast 3.7 pages per minute (ppm). That’s a bit slower than the less expensive Brother MFC-J430w ($100 street, 4 stars), but MFC-J430w’s fast speed is one of the reasons why it’s an Editors’ Choice. To put both speeds in context, note that the somewhat more expensive Editors’ Choice Brother MFC-J825DW ($150 street, 4 stars) scored 4 ppm. Also, note that the 5520 scored well on photo speed, averaging 1 minute 3 seconds for a 4-by-6 photo.
Much like its speed, the 5520′s output quality overall is reasonably good, but not impressive. Text quality is a step above par for an inkjet, but it’s balanced by graphics quality that’s a step below par. Photo quality is dead on par.
Text is easily good enough for home use or most business use. I wouldn’t use it for a resume or other output that needs to look fully professional, but some fonts qualify as highly readable even at sizes as small as 4 points. Graphics are also high enough quality for most business needs, but I saw subtle banding and occasional streaks of white in solid areas in my tests. Color photos are a match for what you can expect from drugstore prints. However, images with dark areas aren’t as contrasty as they should be, and a black and white photo in my test showed different color tints at different shades of gray.
I’d like this printer better if it included an Ethernet connector, so you wouldn’t be forced to have Wi-Fi to use most of the features that make it an e-All-in-One. If you already have a Wi-Fi network, however, don’t mind setting one up to take full advantage of the printer, or don’t have any need of the Internet or Wi-Fi based features, that’s not an issue. In any of these scenarios, if you need a printer at home with reasonably fast speed and suitably high-quality output, the HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One is a more than reasonable choice.

Apple to drop Google Maps with the next iPhone? Comment
Rumor has it that the next iPhone will eschew Google's Maps backend in favor of Apple's own. Rene over at iMore, who has a good handle on how the minds in Cupertino operate, has a great overview of Apple's supposed current strategy that you really should read to try to make sense out of this one. The short version — Apple wants to shed Google's services. Not because users have a problem using them, but because they don't want Google to profit. Instead of offering an additional choice with their own version of a maps app, they are just going to replace what users know and love with something that generates less profit for Google. Smart business move, but a pretty foul dump on the users.
They're going to need some real magic to pull this one off. In the current version, Apple builds the UI and Google provides the mapping data. Google is really good at mapping stuff. The rumored version-in-waiting is supposed to add a 3D view, becoming the new killer feature for the next version of iOS. The problem is, users don't care about 3D map view (or anything 3D on their mobile devices) — they care about features, ease-of-use, and integration. Apple can certainly take care of the integration part, and even give it some of that good old fashioned Apple magic in the UI department. But that still isn't going to cut it. Google has the one big thing™ when it comes to maps and navigation — search data.
When you tap the button and tell your phone to find 1313 Mockingbird Lane, there's this unfathomably huge pool of data Google has at it's disposal to populate that map. Need to know where the closest Starbucks is? Ask Siri, or just look at the Google Maps app. Apple can't replicate this without years of it's own data. Users will be left with an app with a pretty front-end, that's actually a step backwards in functionality. Apple will either have to offer a sub-par maps experience, or use Google anyway. And the first person who says Bing has to stay late and clean the chalkboard. That's two steps backwards.
Google creates the web services people want and use — even people with iPhones. This is a space where Apple is going to find it's difficult to compete, and fickle users may just look elsewhere. Of course, you'll find just as many bloggers telling tales of how great this is, and that Apple invented Maps. It's going to be interesting to watch this one play out.

Libya govt starts to get tough on road to democracy Comment
The tendency to resort to the arms which ousted Moamer Kadhafi poses a roadblock to democracy in the new Libya, analysts warn, while recognising the government‘s growing capacity to defuse crises.
Libyan authorities resorted to force on Tuesday for the first time to repel dozens of armed men who had laid siege to Prime Minister Abdel Rahim al-Kib‘s offices to demand stipends and medical treatment for the war wounded.
“It is not just rogue elements but a pernicious logic that prevails across the country,” Middle East specialist Karim Bitar told AFP, warning that Libya risks becoming swept by instability spreading across the Sahel region.
“The situation is very worrying,” he said in reference to the latest attack on the government that left one dead and four people wounded.
Libya’s new rulers face almost daily protests from armed ex-fighters who want financial and other benefits in recognition of their role in toppling the regime of slain leader Kadhafi in 2011.
The government has counted on dialogue with demonstrators, only to be cowed into signing checks by former rebels flaunting their firepower or blocking access to oil companies and institutions.
“The government will not be able to hold on for long if it keeps yielding to blackmail and buying the allegiance of militias with hard cash,” Bitar said.
In televised remarks late Tuesday, Kib adopted a tough tone, vowing that his government would “not negotiate under the threat of arms” and warning of the use of force if necessary.
Tripoli High Security Committee head Khaled Besher said 14 assailants were arrested following the worst attack in Tripoli against Libya’s new rulers.
How the government deals with militias, made up of former rebels who fought against Kadhafi’s regime, could make or break Libya’s transition to democracy, analysts say.
“People are not going to let go of their arms unless they feel that they are part of the political process,” said an Arab pro-democracy activist in Tripoli, while warning that hurried elections could pave the way for more violence.
Strengthening state institutions, tackling rogue militias and dealing fairly with former supporters of Kadhafi’s regime are steps the interim authorities must take to bring about normalisation, he said.
“With all the problems, the Libyan leadership has succeeded to a large extent in defusing the tensions,” said the activist, asking not to be named.
Peter Cole of the International Crisis Group praises the government’s handling of the latest crisis, noting the security forces used to intervene had been handpicked by the interior ministry.
But the bigger challenge remains in the national army and the defence ministry, which bloc-registered entire brigades without effectively bringing them under their command.
“By itself, the government and army doesn’t have the capacity to secure the country for elections,” said Cole, adding that individual disputes are likely to erupt during a vote.
“But the High Election Commission does have the ability to reach out to local authorities to manage security … And there is no indication that, on the whole, militia groups have a desire to derail elections,” he said.
Jason Pack, a researcher at Cambridge University and president of Libya-Analysis.com, sees it as “unlikely that the national army and security forces can be rapidly established to secure” a vote.
Libyans are due to elect a constituent assembly next month in what marks the first national vote after four decades of dictatorship.
The slogan “freedom does not mean anarchy” has become a mantra on the lips of interim government officials struggling to deal with periodic communal conflicts and violent outbursts by former rebels demanding benefits.
Lamia Abusedra, a founder of the Benghazi-based Forum For a Democratic Libya, said her group is working to spread a culture of dialogue and remains optimistic.
“We lived under dictatorship for 42 years but everyone agrees that they want democracy,” she said, downplaying the insecurity as the result of a lack of experience in dialogue as well as the abundance of arms.
